I feel like it was just yesterday that you were sleepy and tiny, balled up on my chest. And then, just like that, you’re a crawling, standing, almost-walking one-year-old with blue eyes that seem to sparkle when you laugh (which is ALL the time).
You have done so much in the last three months. You learned to crawl, how to sit up from laying down and how to stand up from sitting. You love to walk along the couch and other furniture, and sometimes I catch you standing on your toes trying to reach something that you’re not supposed to have (like mommy’s computer). 😉
You love to climb. I found you standing up on your brother’s chair the other day, and daddy caught you standing up on the dishwasher door when he turned his back to put a bowl away. You’ve pretty much mastered climbing the stairs at this point, too. Needless to day, we are now using a baby gate in our house. 😉
While you’re still incredibly laid back, you’re starting to express some opinions, especially if someone takes something away from you that you don’t like. I got a full-blown wail the other day when I removed a tiny piece of dryer lint from your mouth. You tolerate your brother for the most part, but definitely have moments when you lose your patience with him – like the other day, when you let out a scream that stopped him in his tracks (I couldn’t help but laugh).
You sleep great, a solid 11 hours at night, but you seem to be waking up earlier and earlier these days around 5:30 or 5:45 and mommy might not survive if you don’t start sleeping in. I drink a lot of coffee!
You love to eat and feed yourself like a pro. You are now eating table foods and love cheese, raspberries, hot dogs, mac and cheese, spaghetti, corn, cheerios, and pretty much anything we put in front of you.
I gave you a sippy cup the other day and you looked at me like I’d just given you the best gift in the world. You’re doing well at drinking out of it, and really love the fact that it has Mickey Mouse on the outside. 🙂
Gosh, you love your big brother. You want to be by him at any chance you get, and for the most part, he wants you by him too, unless you’re trying to grab his Batman car or knock over his blocks. 😉 He loves making you laugh and will do anything to get a reaction out of you. He plays peek-a-boo with you and runs along beside you as you crawl. You two really are the sweetest together. I don’t know why I ever was afraid you wouldn’t get along
You also love your daddy. You give him the biggest smiles when you see him and you love to wave at him. He blows raspberries on your neck and tickles you with his beard and you can’t even control your laughter. It’s the sweetest sound.
You say, “da da da” nonstop. Everything and everyone is “da” with a pointed finger. However, every now and then you say, “mama,” seemingly when you know you need to get a real reaction (e.g. when you’re upset… I fall for it every time). You also say what sounds an awful lot like “brother.” And I’m pretty sure today you kind of said, “ball.”
You love to listen to mommy sing, and the Itsy Bitsy Spider can calm most tears. As we get ready for bed, you lay at night and listen so attentively as mommy sings to you. Those are the moments I will never forget.
My wish is that I had more time. This year has gone by so quickly, and I don’t want to miss a moment of you growing up because I know it’ll happen fast.
Here’s the truth: before I got pregnant, I wondered, “Can I really love a second baby as much as I love my first?” And when I got pregnant, I knew that I could because oh my gosh, I loved you already before I even met you. But then I laid eyes on you for the first time and I felt my heart skip a beat. And I feel that same feeling every time you look up at me with those sweet blue eyes, or give me one of your sleepy smiles around your pacifier, or when snuggle against my chest and go to sleep. Turns out, the heart is capable of holding as much love as you’ll allow it to hold. Turns out, I’m absolutely crazy about you, too.
I can’t believe you’re one year old, my sweet angel. It’s been the greatest year of my life and we love you so much! Happy birthday, baby boy!
